Overall Opinion: ShareX is a free and open source application designed to capture screen shots and make them available to others via common sharing sites. You can upload the captured images to over 80 destinations. Destinations include image sharing locations, such as Imgur or Flickr, text sharing locations such as Pastebin, file sharing locations, such as DropBox or OneDrive and many more. You can also upload to URL shorteners, such as bit.ly. You can also configure what ShareX does after you capture the image. This includes things like automatically uploading the image to a location based on the file type, copying the file to clipboard, saving the file to disk and even running Optical Character Recognition on the image. You can also configure ShareX to perform certain tasks after the upload, such as copying the URL to the clipboard or automatically shortening the resulting URL. ShareX is incredibly easy to download, install and use. When you open the installed application on your PC, it shows you how to capture the desired image for upload: the entire screen, the active window, or just a portion of the screen. The key combinations are configurable within the ShareX "settings" screen. You can also choose to record your screen and upload the recording, although doing so requires you to download and install ffmpeg, another free software package. There has been over 10 years of active development on ShareX. It is open source software (based on GNU General Public License version 3), which means that you can download and review the source code yourself, as well as distribute the software or create derivative works based on the source code.
Pros: ShareX is open source software that is available at no cost. There are over 80 destinations available for upload, including most popular image, text and file sharing sites. Very simple to install and use.
Cons: ShareX is written in C# and is currently available only for the Windows operating system. As open source software, based on the GNU General Public License, there is no warranty on the software. While it appears to be default functionality, screen recordings require you to download and install ffmpeg, a separate application.
